Blue Jays trade Teoscar Hernández to Mariners

Why Toronto dealt the All-Star outfielder

Toronto traded the outfielder to the Mariners for LHP Adam Macko and RHP Erik Swanson

The Toronto Blue Jays traded left fielder Teoscar Hernández to the Seattle Mariners on Saturday night, getting left-handed pitching prospect Adam Macko and right-handed reliever Erik Swanson in return.

Hernández, a 30-year-old All-Star, was acquired by the Blue Jays from the Houston Astros in 2017 and has been a key part of their lineup ever since. He was batting .287 with a .349 on-base percentage and a .494 slugging percentage in 100 games this season, with 20 home runs and 74 RBIs.

Macko, 22, is a 6-foot-6, 220-pound left-hander who was rated as the Mariners' No. 9 prospect by MLB Pipeline. He has a 3.41 ERA in 18 starts at Double-A this season and has struck out 105 batters in 95 innings.

Swanson, 29, is a 6-foot-4, 230-pound right-hander who has been a solid reliever for the Mariners. He has a 3.27 ERA in 46 appearances this season and has struck out 47 batters in 47 innings.

The Blue Jays are expected to replace Hernández in left field with Raimel Tapia, who was acquired from the Colorado Rockies in a trade last month.
